A New Chapter in Serving Families

To my Knit Together friends and nonprofit partners,

As my time with Boise Rescue Mission comes to a close, I’m beginning a new chapter focused on helping CarePortal cast a wider net across the Treasure Valley. I’m grateful for the work we’ve already shared and the generous people who continue to show up for families in need. This next step is rooted in the same belief that has guided my work all along: when we step in early, meet practical needs, and surround families with support, we can change the trajectory of a child’s life.

CarePortal creates a direct connection between families in crisis and people, churches, businesses, and organizations willing to help. Rather than requiring families to navigate multiple agencies, red tape, and complicated application processes, CarePortal helps bring their specific needs to the attention of a community that can respond.

Sometimes, what stands between a family and stability is surprisingly practical: groceries to get through the week, an overdue utility bill, rent assistance, a bed for a child, furniture for an empty home, or cash to cover an urgent expense. These needs may seem small compared with the challenges a family is facing, but meeting them at the right moment can prevent a crisis from becoming something much bigger.

This is where CarePortal can make an extraordinary difference.

Traditional assistance programs are essential, but they often operate within funding rules, eligibility requirements, and restrictions that leave some families without help. CarePortal offers a more direct, flexible way to respond to identified needs. By connecting local needs with willing community partners, it can reduce the layers of administration and red tape that sometimes delay assistance or prevent families from qualifying altogether.

The goal is not to replace established services. It is to fill the gaps between them.

And those gaps matter most when children are involved.

When families lack basic necessities, housing stability, or the resources to manage an emergency, children and teens can face increased risks of neglect, displacement, family separation, and exploitation. Providing timely support can help families remain together, maintain a safe home, and avoid deeper involvement with the child welfare system when practical assistance could help prevent a crisis from escalating.

It can also be an important part of protecting vulnerable young people from traffickers and others who prey on instability. Children experiencing homelessness, family disruption, or unmet basic needs may be more vulnerable to people who offer money, shelter, or a sense of belonging in exchange for exploitation. Helping families stay stable and ensuring young people have safe adults and supportive communities around them can strengthen those protective barriers.

Meeting a family’s immediate needs is more than charity. It is an investment in prevention, safety, and long-term stability.

As I begin this work, my hope is to connect more Treasure Valley churches, nonprofits, businesses, and individuals with opportunities to make a tangible difference. Imagine what could happen if more of us knew where the gaps were, and had a straightforward way to help fill them.

That is the wider net I want to help CarePortal cast: one that reaches families who might otherwise fall through the cracks, mobilizes resources already present in our communities, and makes it easier for people to turn compassion into action.

Thank you for being part of the Knit Together community and for continuing to care about the families and children who need us. I look forward to sharing more as this work grows and inviting you to be part of what comes next.

If you’d like to be part of making a difference in our community, reach out to us today.

Or, if you prefer to make a difference with a year end donation, your gift will help provide families with much needed resources such as food and clothing during the holiday season.

Together, we can help families find stability, give children a safer future, and remind our neighbors that they are not alone.
