The Wider World of Surveillance and Slavery

While we all know there are valid reasons to be concerned about our freedoms as Americans, many of us don’t know the full extent to which our freedoms have been unconstitutionally violated in the last few years. Even as news leaks out about the financial abuses of government spending and the appalling misuse of tax dollars, we are still getting just a glimpse of what’s really been going on behind the scenes.

According the ChatGPT, here are a few of the more harmful ways we’ve been controlled behind the scenes:

In a letter to Jason Matheny of RAND Corporation, Ted Cruz outline his concerns over RANDs involvement with the previous administration and their use of Ai technology to censor and even persecute ideological opponents. You can read the full letter here.

protecting ourselves

With Google openly admitting they may engage in surveillance, we have every reason to believe that this could continue.

The question we have to ask ourselves is what will our response be?

It might seem that there is little we can do, but the reality is we all have the power to choose something different for ourselves. Taking a hard look at what we engage in and what we share online might be one place to start.

Likewise, we should be carefully considering whether social media or other online platforms are really worth the time and energy we give them. Much of that time could be directed to far more productive activities, including spending time with the people we care about. With so much of our content being censored anyway, how much better off would we be to create our own systems for keeping in contact with those at a distance? Do we really need these platforms? What if we just text, call or even video chat?

These are questions we may need to begin asking ourselves now that we know the full extent of the surveillance happening on these platforms.

For many of us, we have been aware of the censorship for some time and have ceased to utilize social media like we may have in the past. But for some, this might be news, and possibly a bit of an awakening to the reality of the “machine” (no pun intended) we’re up against.

Now that the facts are coming out around the January 6 convictions, and we know that surveillance tactics were used to entrap and imprison American citizens without proper due process, it’s clear that we have crossed over into extremely risky territory. How much do you trust the government with your information when they clearly have proven they can be highly untrustworthy?

Since data from these platforms remains on servers indefinitely, we have to carefully consider what the long term ramifications of their use really are.

Changes under trump administration

That said, there is some positive news which might ease our concerns a little, although should not be accepted as gospel truth either. According to ChatGPT, “The Trump administration has taken a clear stance against the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for censorship purposes. On January 23, 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order titled ‘Removing Barriers to American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence,’ which emphasizes the importance of AI systems being ‘free from ideological bias or engineered social agendas.’ This order revokes previous AI policies from the Biden administration that were perceived as imposing unnecessary government control over AI development and deployment.

The administration’s approach focuses on reducing regulatory barriers to foster innovation in AI, with a particular emphasis on preventing the use of AI for censorship. This includes ensuring that AI is not utilized to suppress free speech or enforce specific ideological perspectives. The executive order mandates a review of existing AI policies and directives to identify and eliminate those that may hinder American AI innovation.

In line with this policy direction, the administration has appointed David Sacks as the White House AI and cryptocurrency czar. Sacks is tasked with establishing the U.S. as a leader in AI and cryptocurrency while safeguarding free speech and preventing tech censorship.

Overall, the Trump administration’s position is to promote AI development that upholds free expression and avoids censorship, aiming to maintain America’s leadership in AI innovation.”

While we are making progress in terms of policy, we have every reason to be cautious. For those who have been impacted by the censorship of the previous administration, much of the damage may have already been done. From financial to personal persecution, many have faced the tyranny of a dictatorial administration willing to go to any lengths to ruin its opposition.

More than ever, we must stay alert and be judicious in our use of platforms, knowing any information we share can, at any point, be used against us.

the long term outlook

As more facts emerge about the extent of censorship under the Biden-Harris administration, we could see the beginning of large scale litigation efforts. As the facts behind these larger surveillance efforts are exposed, for those who have been targeted, de-platformed, or in some way lost income from these oppressive tactics, there is clearly plenty of incentive to seek reparations which will lay the groundwork for case law in the future.

Undoubtedly, we have entered a new era of fighting for freedoms on an individual level, which may lead to many smaller cases being filed against big tech. And, as a collective, we continue to wield power in our numbers which could allow for class action law suits against targeted populations.
